Why Do Engines Need Colder Air?

air intake volantAir intake systems bring power to a vehicle’s engine.
It’s a proven fact that having colder air coming from an Cold Air Intake will increase the power and efficiency of an engine. This happens because air is one of two key elements that power an internal combustion engine. Inside of these engines, fuel (the other major component) and air mix inside of the combustion chamber to generate power for the spark plug. NOW, if drivers can get more air into the combustion chamber, there will be a sizeable increase in the power capabilities of the engine. So, how do you get more air in the combustion chamber?

The answer is easy: grab colder air with an air scoop. Colder air is denser and provides a higher amount of pure oxygen, which means more can be packed in.

The Air Scoop Will Increase Engine Power

The engine area of a vehicle should be no more than 50 degrees warmer than the air outside. If it is, there will be a serious lack of efficiency that will limit engine performance. Luckily, there are tools that can help bring cool air into an engine. One of the best tools is an air scoop.

Air scoops were originally designed to funnel cooler outside air into hard working aircraft engines. Now, these air scoops are being used for vehicles on the road. An air scoop used for a vehicle is an extended attachment that reaches outside of the vehicle’s body for cooler air. The air is then funneled into the vehicle’s engine and air intake system.

Finding the best place for your air scoop will depend on your vehicle and the style of driving you do. For example, some place the air scoop lower to the ground because warm air rises and colder air will be closer to the ground, but this may not work for those that drive in swampy areas where the scoop could be flooded.

Hood Scoops

Some air scoops are designed to gather air through a raised opening on the hood of the vehicle, which allows the engine to “breathe.” This particular style is known as a “hood scoop.” Hood scoops can be mounted onto a hood and can be faced forward or backward. However, these scoops must be high enough to avoid the slow moving air that glides along the vehicle’s body, also known as the boundary layer.

In order to maximize efficiency, hood scoops should be mounted at the highest pressure point of the hood. For many, that area is at the rear of the hood near the cowl because this is where the air is at its highest pressure due to the curved shape of the windshield.

Volant Air Intakes

Volant is an air intake manufacturer that has always been at the forefront of innovation. Volant was the first to develop sealed air filter boxes, the first to utilize X-link polyethylene, and the first to add air scoops to truck and SUV air intake systems.

Over the years, all of these innovations have been perfected and have helped Volant reach an unparalleled level of excellence. Today, many of their air intake systems utilize a high quality air scoop to help cool the vehicle’s engine. For anybody searching for the best air intake system, take look at the excellent products coming from Volant.
