Successful Snowplowing: The Right Equipment
What could be simpler than snowplowing; it’s just pushing some snow around right? Wrong… Although plowing snow is relatively easy, if you don’t have the right equipment you’ll quickly find out how frustrating snowplowing can be.

Snowplows: Bigger isn’t Always Better
One of the biggest mistake people make is to rush out and buy the biggest snowplow possible. There’s nothing wrong with this in itself, but if the ATV or UTV it’s going to be used with isn’t powerful enough, it’s not going to be able to push the blade once it’s loaded up with snow.

Generally speaking any ATV or UTV of 500cc or under should stick to a plow blade under 60 inches. You’d be surprised how many would-be plowers get the widest blade they can only to sit there spinning their wheels when they try and use it. Smaller blades are also more maneuverable around solid objects, which is particularly helpful if you’re doing complicated plowing around your property.

Tip: Don’t buy the biggest plow simply for the sake of it.

Chains Get Your Snowplow Going
Anyone who’s spent time plowing will tell you that the combination of a set of tire chains and a small blade will out-plow an ATV or UTV with a big blade and no chains any day. Plowing is all about traction and if your wheels are just spinning on the snow you’re wasting your time. Also, be sure to fit chains on all four tires, particularly if the vehicle is 4x4.

Tip: Don’t even think about pushing snow without tire chains!

Let There be Light
Lights are largely forgotten about in the middle of summer because daylight begins at 6am and ends at 9pm, but no one needs to plow snow in the summer! When winter – and the snow – hits it will be dark until 8am and the sun sets again at 4pm. Needless to say there will be times when you will be plowing in the dark, and it’s at those times that lights are invaluable.

Tip: Fit additional lights to your ATV/UTV for winter; you’ll be glad you did.

Save Money and Plow Better

Even if you’re on a budget you can plow snow like a pro. If you don’t have money to burn (and who does?) go for the most basic plow, a set of chains and some lights. This whole package will cost you less than a big plow with all the features.

Remember, you’re just trying to push snow – it’s not rocket science. Smart people opt for getting the right tools, the other people are tools.
