Steven Eugenio Wins the Rigid Industries SCORE Desert Challenge
The 19th edition of the SCORE Desert Challenge promoted by Rigid Lights was recently held at the Coyne Powersports Motorplex near Plaster City, California in Imperial Valley. This was one of the most competitive events and it saw Steven Eugenio of Galindo Motosports emerge the winner. Eugenio captured the SCORE Trophy Truck victory Sunday in the two-segments of the 19th annual Rigid Industries SCORE Desert Challenge that was presented by the City of Imperial, California.

Weekend Full of Racing

The SCORE Desert Challenge started on Friday night, continued all day and evening on Saturday, and concluded late Sunday afternoon. Eugenio managed to cover 94.2 miles in 12 laps covering the 7.85-mile course in one hour, 32 minutes and 38 seconds, averaging 61.01 miles per hour. He was in his No. 7 Galindo Motorsports Chevy Silverado that did not let him down on the extremely dusty racecourse. Eugenio has previously won in multiple classes in the SCORE races but this was his first SCORE Trophy Truck race win.

Round 4 of the SCORE Desert Challenge

Round 4 of the five-race 2014 edition of the SCORE World Desert Championship was divided into multiple days with different classes divided into smaller groups just like in the other SCORE Desert Challenge events previously. Each class apart from the SCORE Trophy Truck and Trophy Truck Spec had two eight-lap segments in the 7.85-mile course track at the Coyne Powersports Motorplex.

This year’s edition of the SCORE Desert Challenge was faced with safety and environmental concerns leading to near zero-visibility forcing race officials to reduce the number of laps for the SCORE Trophy Truck Spec to 14 and the SCORE Trophy Trucks to 12 laps. The remaining classes ran their scheduled 16 laps divided into two segments. As the dust finally settled late Sunday afternoon, there were 67 official finishers out of the 89 who had started.

Eugenio managed to lead for eight laps after the first segment and stayed ahead to the last lap. Following the victory, Eugenio said, “Our plan was to run hard but not push it more than we had to. This win gives us a lot of momentum going into the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 and hopefully we can do well there. This is my first SCORE Trophy Truck win and we’ve been there all year and close but we’ve had some misfortunes.”

Eugenio was excited to win in his hometown and continued to say, “We never had a mistake out there today and we drove pretty hard through the dust. From start to finish we couldn’t see anything.”
