Pro Comp Adds Rock Crawler Wheels

Pro Comp Adds Rock Crawler Wheels

If you are an off-road enthusiast who enjoys the challenges and victories of rock crawling over difficult terrain, than you already know that the sport is one of the most extreme forms of driving that anyone can do on four wheels. Using light trucks, Jeeps or buggies, drivers take their vehicles over insanely harsh terrain, which include driving up boulders, mountains and narrow trailheads.

For most car freaks, the joys of competing in an automotive event usually involves going fast with tires spinning, however rock crawling is for an entirely different type of enthusiast. Instead of racing a clock or other drivers, rock crawling is all about slow speed and precision driving in hopes of getting over (or down) otherwise impassable obstacles. For many rock crawlers, it’s not uncommon to spend more than 10 minutes trying to get on top of single boulder. As you might imagine, the rock crawling crowd tends to focus on products that are built to for strength and durability rather than style and fashion, yet Pro Comp’s newest line of rock crawler wheels don’t compromise a thing.

Pro Comp’s Latest Wheels

Unlike most aftermarket wheel companies, Pro Comp decided to use steel to make their latest lineup of rock crawler wheels. While most enthusiasts are looking for wheels that are lightweight with shiny chrome finishes, Pro Comp knew that their wheels needed to be able to take the abuse that comes with rock crawling.

Aluminum and alloy wheels are notorious for cracking when pushed to the absolute limit, steel on the other hand will always bend instead of breaking. This means that rock crawlers never have to worry about getting stuck in the wilderness due to a broken spoke or a shattered hub. Plus, the rock crawler wheels, just like the rest of Pro Comp’s products, are made in the U.S.A. Below are three popular examples of Pro Comp’s Rock Crawler Wheels:

  • Pro Comp 152: This wheel was specifically made to offer a hardcore look on a street legal wheel. The simulated beadlock finish covers the welded, smooth outer ring, which gives a modern look on this steel wheel.
  • Pro Comp 87: A deep dish, small round hole look and extreme strength make this wheel one of the strongest rims on the market. These wheels are available in 15 or 16’’ and can be used for excessive abuse or for leisurely drives to the supermarket.
  • Pro Comp 82: These wheels were made for rock crawlers who demand attention. Unlike the tradition gloss or flat black look that is popular with most off-road enthusiasts, these wheels were made for the guys who like to stick out from the crowd. The white powder coated wheels have a classic wagon wheel look and are made with the same precision and strength as the rest of the rock crawler series.

Getting Started in Rock Crawling

Rock Crawling is one of the most addictive types of off-road driving. After you’ve gotten over your first obstacle or boulder, literally everything on and off the road looks like a personal challenge; you’ll literally be driving down the road looking at ditches and old stumps thinking “I could drive over that.”

Naturally, one of the most important things to keep in mind before showing up at the Moab Desert is putting together a machine that can handle the terrain you plan on conquering. For small trails and foothills, a 4WD Jeep with a low gear and lowered PSI in the tires is enough to get started, but for extreme driving, it’s important to prepare your vehicle with the appropriate modifications. Some of these parts include:
In short, if you’re looking to get started in rock crawling, the best thing you can do is go check out some of your local trails and off-road events in your area. The more experience you gather on the trails, the better you’ll be able to handle your machine. However, it never hurts to have some quality wheels and tires under your Jeep before you try tackling some boulders.
