Volant Air Filter - When to Clean

Volant Air Filter - When to Clean

dirty air filter

A dirty air filter reduces engine power
and increases fuel consumption

A dirty air filter means not enough air is getting through to your engine, and that saps power and decreases fuel efficiency. If you’re still using the stock OEM air filter system with paper filters then you can’t clean the filter, you have to throw it away and buy a new one, and that’s a waste of money. But if you’re smart you’ve upgraded your intake system with a Volant CAI kit and your filter should last the lifetime of your truck if you clean it periodically.

When Should I Clean My Volant Filter?

Volant stipulates that its filters be cleaned every 12,000 miles, which for most drivers is going to be about once a year, although it also recommends cleaning them “only when very dirty”. Calculating every 12,000 miles is easy, deciding exactly when “only when very dirty” occurs is less precise.

How quickly your air filter needs cleaning depends for the most part on where you live and drive. Remember that the filter is constantly having air run through it and if that air is full of contaminates the filter will become clogged much quicker.

to clean your filter frequently if you drive

Volant’s recommendations are based on a vehicle being driven in a city/suburban environment where dust and debris are at a minimum. If you live in a rural area, especially one with a dusty climate you’ll probably want to clean your filter at every 6 months/6,000 miles instead of every year/12,000 miles.

Air Filters and Off-Roading

One of the reasons for fitting a Volant CAI kit is for the extra power it gives the engine, and a lot of people wanting extra power are going to take their vehicle onto the trails.

Off-road conditions are usually far more extreme than city streets, with dense dust clouds, sand and mud all making the air filter work to the max. Anyone who takes to the trails is advised to clean their air filters regularly, sometimes after every off-road escapade if the conditions were particularly dusty.

and keep your engine running
at peak performance

Volant has made cleaning its filters a simple task. Just remove the filter and tap it to remove loose dirt and debris then rinse it with cold water. After allowing it to dry use a Volant Filter Recharger Kit to return the filter to peak condition. Easy.

So if you mainly drive in the city or on the highway you probably only need to clean a Volant filter once a year. If you’re in a rural or dusty area you may want to clean it every 6 months, and if you like to hit the trails then maybe you should clean your air filter once a month.Volant products are available at 4WheelOnline
