Overview

Starting in 2007, GM switched all of their ½-ton trucks and SUVs to a rack and pinion steering system rather than a traditional steering box. While this change may have refined the handling of these vehicles, the overly soft bushings that are used for the rack mounts cause numerous steering issues when a larger tire and wheel package is added to the vehicle. Daystar™ now offers heavy-duty replacement bushings that solve these problems and “tighten up” steering feel, making them a beneficial upgrade for stock and modified vehicles alike.

Plus-sized tires and wheels are heavier than factory tire packages and often have a wider contact patch, which introduces additional stress to the steering system. While most of the steering components are up to the task, the additional stress to the weak factory rack bushings causes the rack to flex and move excessively on its mounts. This movement leads to numerous steering and handling problems, including steering wheel shimmy, wandering, and an overall vague feel. The high heat of an engine compartment only aggravates the problem, as rubber becomes softer as it heats up.

Daystar Rack & Pinion Bushings are direct replacements for the factory bushings; no rack modifications are needed. Factory bushings are only available with a replacement rack which is very expensive. Instead of rubber, the new Daystar™ bushings are constructed of durable high-performance polyurethane. These bushings eliminate the excessive rack flex caused by the factory bushings while still providing the insulating properties necessary to keep vibrations from being transferred to the steering wheel. While designed for the abuse of modified vehicles, these bushings are beneficial even for stock vehicles with worn bushings and vague or questionable steering characteristics.
