The Main Event

The main event on Friday September 5th saw Busch start well and his No. 54 Toyota Camry was recorded as the race leader every lap. He maintained the lead to help his team get the fifth victory this season. This event marked the second time Busch had led every circuit with the last one being at the Phoenix International Raceway in February.

During the race, Busch visited pit road three times to get the car tightened to his liking. This was after numerous complaints from him on how the car handled. Early in the race, Busch was heard saying, “I was really loose those last four or five laps, ‘she’ wasn’t happy.” The team used the opportunity when he first visited pit road to make some adjustments and help him maintain the first place position. Kevin Harvick with his No. 5 car was the only serious competitor who kept Busch on his toes as he was always on second position posting the fastest lap times.

Busch felt Harvick’s presence behind him and kept asking how far behind he was. His team used the opportunity to encourage him by revealing that his Camry was beating everybody at certain spots on the track.

67th Career Win for Busch

At lap 250 when he crossed the finish line, Busch had the perfect driver rating of 150.00 having led each circuit from the start line. This was Busch 67th career win in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. As he exited the car, Busch was overheard saying, “Good car, good decisions and good execution there tonight. This Monster Energy Camry was good. I knew we were in for a different result than what we've been here the last couple of times, so I'm pretty pumped about that and pretty pumped about being back in victory lane and being back in victory lane in the Nationwide Series here at Richmond.”

The win in Richmond makes Busch the five-time Nationwide Series winner at RIR. Other drivers in the top five spot were Chase Elliott, Harvick, Ryan Blaney and Brian Scott. This race had six caution periods with zero lead changes.
