Death Wobbles and How to Avoid Them

A proper alignment is neccessary on trucks and SUVs.

Cruising along at 50 mph with your top down and your music jamming is when it can happen. Your steering wheel goes into an Epileptic Seizure and the whole vehicle starts shimmying around your lane. If you’re lucky you can maintain your lane and control the wildness, if you’re unlucky…Well, you wouldn’t be reading this article.

On an off-road vehicle, a lifted truck or SUV or even a stock Jeep, it is essential to keep your suspension in good working order. The components of a truck’s suspension all work in unison together, and if there is one weak link (literally), the whole physics of the machine are put into jeopardy. The risks increase exponentially when a vehicle has been modified or lifted, which typically work better for off-road driving than on the highway.

Troubleshooting

fast and furious 6Death Wobbles can shake loose and damage vital suspension components on Jeeps.

If you have a vehicle that is prone to a Death Wobble at certain speeds or when you hit particularly nasty bump or bit of rough pavement, you’re probably looking to fix the problem ASAP. The smartest way to go about fixing your dangerous problem is by spending a bit of time underneath your vehicle. Unfortunately there are more than a handful of causes for Death Wobble, but luckily there are a few “usual suspects” that you can inspect first.

  • The Pitman Arm is linkage to the steering column. Check for bends or damage.

  • Sway Bar Links keep the body roll of a vehicle in-line. Check for damage.

  • Lower Control Arms keep the wheels in alignment. Look for damage to bushings.

  • Tie Rods help push and pull the wheels as you steer. Look for damage to bushings.
When you’re inspecting the various suspension parts of the vehicle, look at every bushing and rod on the front end suspension. If something looks excessively worn or questionable have a mechanic look over your vehicle before driving on a highway. Also, a proper alignment, caster and toe-in adjustment are necessary for a well running machine. An out-of-alignment truck is susceptible to Death Wobble, especially if you’re running incorrect tire pressure.

Combating Death Wobbles

  1. Confirm which speed the Death Wobble occurs; this is what is called the “Trigger Point.”

  2. If you have a vehicle prone to Wobbles, avoid the trigger point by all costs.

  3. If your vehicle does begin a Death Wobble, apply the brakes immediately, Do Not Speed Up.

  4. Pull onto the shoulder to a safe place to inspect your vehicle. Confirm that no bolts shook loose.

  5. Avoid the trigger speed and proceed to your mechanic.

It can be very time consuming to fix Death Wobble on a truck or SUV. The causes of the “shakes” can seem limitless once you start troubleshooting. But, the effects of your car shimmying down the road at 50mph should be enough motivation for you to repair the vehicle. Most specialty off-road mechanics are familiar with Death Wobbles and can help you sort out what is causing the malfunction. Until the “Wobbles” are gone, be extremely attentive when driving your machine.
