What Is The Right Tire Type for Your Motorcycle?

What Kind of Rider Are You?

Getting a new set of tires for your bike is an important decision for any rider. Riders may be looking to replace old tires or just upgrade their current set, but no matter what the reason, it’s important to remember that each bike is designed to work in harmony with only certain tires. By taking a look at your riding style and the areas you ride in, finding the right tire will be a whole lot easier.

Wheel Styles

As we all know, there are a number of variations and styles of riders on the road. Knowing what type of rider you are is the first step to choosing the right set of tires. Motorcycle tires come in 4 distinct styles, each of which is aimed at satisfying all of your needs.

Race Tires

Race tires, also known as track or slick tires, are designed to bring an upgraded performance for riders that like to get out on the track. Most motorcycle tires are designed to handle 1g of lateral force, which is produced when a motorcycle is leaning at a 45 degree angle on a turn. Racing tires are designed to handle up to 1.3g’s of force and can lean over 50 degrees. These tires have this kind of leaning capability because the rubber is built with a special soft rubber compound and a triangulated shape. However, because of this design, racing tires wear out quicker and don’t have as long of a life.

Sport Tires

Sport tires have a lot of similarities with race tires. Sport tires are designed for fast paced road action. Because of their radial pattern, they have great road grip in both dry and wet conditions. They can’t handle the same amount of lateral force as a race tire, though. On the flip side, they are more durable. Sport tires come in performance, touring, and street styles.

Off-Road Tires

Like off-road tires for trucks, motorcycle off-road tires have deep tread to help handle different conditions like sand, rock, and mud. The off-road tires have a knobby design and are tightly secured with rim locks to prevent the tire from spinning on the rim in rough conditions.

Cruising/Touring Tires

These tires are a mixture of sport tires and off-road tires, offering a high level of street performance and maintaining long term durability. Additionally, cruising tires offer a superior grip that can handle all weather conditions and they offer unbelievable stability for long trips.

Knowing the styles of tires and the kind of rider you are will go a long way for your bike and its tires.
