6 Tips for Buying a Snowplow
Looks like it's time to buy a snow plow!
There’s never been a better time to buy a snowplow for your ATV or UTV. The winters seem to be getting worse these days with record snowfalls, and tales of people becoming snowed in have become common on the evening news. Unless you want to join these unfortunate households it’s time to get that plow you’ve been promising yourself. Be fully prepared when winter rolls around this year.
With the range of
snowplows
on the market these days the plow buyer is spoilt for choice. However, don’t just fall for the marketing hype and end up buying a plow you’ll regret. Ask yourself a few simple questions to determine the snowplow that will be right for your needs.
1. What vehicle will the plow be mounted to?
Don’t get a plow that’s too big. Generally ATVs should be fitted with plows under 60” and UTVs with plows over 60”. If you buy a plow that’s too big for your vehicle’s power, you won’t be able to push it once it’s loaded with snow. In this case big isn’t necessarily better.
2. How will the plow mounted to the vehicle?
Plows are mounted via a pushtube that is either mid, forward or front mounting on an ATV’s or UTV’s frame. There’s not much to choose between them, although front mounts require shorter pushtubes which therefore makes the system slightly stronger. If you intend on removing the mounting plate once winter is over a more forward mounting will be easier to get to.
Will you be plowing open driveways or will you need to maneuver around trees and other objects?
3. What type of plowing will you be doing?
Are you just going to be clearing your own driveway or will you be plowing your neighbors’ properties and local sidewalks as well? If you plan on doing more plowing you might want a wider plow to speed the process, however a narrower plow is easier to maneuver, particularly around houses.
4. How often will you be plowing?
Do you get a lot of snow in your area that will necessitate frequent plowing, or do you only have sporadic snowfalls requiring less plowing? If you will be plowing often, you’ll probably want to keep the blade permanently attached to your ATV or UTV throughout the snow season, but if you’ll only plow rarely you may want to remove the blade between plows. If so, a plow with an easy on/off attachment will be invaluable.
The Quadboss Pile Driver manual lift kit makes raising and lowering a plow easy.
5. What Kind of blade do you want?
Steel blades are rugged and durable, although they are prone to rust. They are also better at clearing ice and hard-packed snow. Polyurethane, or poly blades won’t rust and are quieter than steel blades. Because snow doesn’t stick to them they are slicker than steel blades and so they are better for working with fresh snow and slush.
6. How are you going to raise the plow?
ATV and UTV plows have 3 kinds of
lifting systems
: manual, electric motor and winch. Some manual systems allow you to remain in the driving seat when being operated, others require you to move. Electric systems mount to the pushtube so there’s no need of a winch mount, but because winches can be used for other purposes as well as lifting plows they are the most popular lift system.
