ATV Exhaust Will Improve Horsepower

Any ATV that you purchase today has a number of compromises built on it. These compromises may be included because the manufacturer wanted it to fit in a specific price range, needed it to meet emission standards, or wanted to maximize its lifespan. But, that doesn't mean you can't take matters into your own hands and upgrade your ATV. Obviously, any car, truck, or ATV enthusiast will want to have the highest performing vehicle possible. The best way to do this is increase the horse power.

What Is Horse Power, Again?

We've all heard the word horsepower tossed around, but what exactly does it mean? Well, horsepower is just a term invented by engineer James Watt (yes, the same guy who established the term watt, which is a measurement for light bulbs). Anyway, Watt came up with the word horsepower in the late 18th century to describe the speed that his horse could move a certain amount of weight. Today, we still measure engines on the capability it has to move a certain amount of weight at a certain speed.

1 unit of Horsepower = 3300 foot-pounds per minute OR being able to move 330 pounds a distance of 100 feet in 1 minute OR being able to move 1000 pounds a distance of 33 feet in 1 minute.
1 Unit of Horsepower is also equivalent to:
- 746 Watts
- 2,545 BTU (British Thermal Units)

Okay, So How Do I Improve the Horsepower on My ATV?
There are a number of aftermarket ways to improve the horsepower of your ATV. One of the best ways is to upgrade your ATV exhaust.

If you have an inferior exhaust system, the air resistance or back pressure will make it harder for the exhaust to exit the cylinder, which takes power away from the engine. This often happens when the exhaust pipe is too small or the muffler has a lot of air resistance. High power exhaust systems utilize headers, bigger tail pipes, and free flowing mufflers to eliminate this pressure.
