Installing the FMF Exhaust System on a Motorcycle
Buying the FMF exhaust is the easy step when it comes to upgrading your exhaust. The challenging part is installing it. Before installing the
FMF exhaust
, you will have to make sure you have all the right tools for the job. Different bikes require different tools and the complete list of tools to use for each specific bike is included in the installation guide. After making sure all the tools are available, follow the steps listed below to install your exhaust.
Remove the Stock Exhaust
The first step will be to remove the head pipe of the stock exhaust. Unscrew the lower part of the head pipe using the appropriate screw. Next, loosen up the bolt of the header of the mid pipe. After loosening it, the header should come out nice and easily. Before removing the entire stock exhaust, you will have to remove the side panel and the surrounding components to get enough space to work with.
After the side panel is removed, unscrew the bolts holding the bigger part of the exhaust. This leaves the exhaust hanging and you can remove it completely leaving space to install the aftermarket exhaust.
Install the FMF Exhaust
After removing the stock exhaust from your bike, you can them attach the aftermarket FMF exhaust you just bought. There are different exhaust systems made by FMF racing to suit the different needs of various drivers. Their exhausts are divided into three categories that include
FMF ATV exhausts
, FMF dirt bike exhausts and FMF street bike exhausts.
The best way to install these exhausts is to start with the header and work your way back. Starting with the header, leave the bolts loose as you work your way up and start tightening them back forward. Attach the header but do not tighten it allowing free movement for the time being. This is the step where most people go wrong when installing exhausts. The head pipe should match where the stock head came off making its installation quick and easy.
After installing the header, you can then install the slip-on muffler. Install the mid pipe first using either the stock bolt or the aftermarket bolts provided in the FMF package. Do not tighten the bolts just yet. Next, attach the extreme end of the muffler and start tightening it from the end moving inwards. Once the exhaust is fully installed, you can reattach the side panel and some of the surrounding components you had removed earlier.
