Factors to Consider while Purchasing ATV Winches
In accessorizing your off-road vehicle, a winch is one of the most significant accessories you can buy. If you are a hardcore off-roader, there is a high chance that you are going to find yourself in challenging situations.
ATV winches
can get you back on the trail with ease; hence, you can spend minimal time stuck in the mud. However, it is important to get the right winch for your vehicle or you could end up stuck. If you are a first time buyer, there are four basic designs options for you to choose from.
Cable Type
First, you will need to decide between synthetic and steel cable. The two cables have both their advantages and disadvantages. ATV steel winch cables need minimal maintenance and can withstand high amount of heat. However, the disadvantage is that the burrs from the Steel winch can gash your skin if you are not cautious. On the other hand, a synthetic winch rope is safer, stronger and lighter but needs attention and care and can weaken if rubbed over sharp objects in your ATV recovery process. The type of ATV winch you select relies on various factors such as the terrain and the weight you are willing to add weight on your vehicle.
Line Speed
Another factor that you need to put into consideration is rated line pull. If you purchase an ATV winch that is too small, you will find it challenging to unstuck. On the other hand, if you buy a larger ATV winch, you are going to add extra weight to your rear or front bumper, which can either slow your truck down or throw it off the balance. The rated line up is defined as the maximum amount of force that your ATV winch can handle effectively. To get the minimum rated line pull, multiply the vehicles gross vehicle weight by 1.5.
Based on how you utilize your ATV winch, you may require a higher line pull, for instance, if you mostly drive in mud, note that the suction force of mud needs a greater pulling force for you to get unstuck.
Solenoid Mounting
It is also essential to consider how the solenoid also referred to as the contractor is mounted on your truck. Remote or integrated are the two options you have. Integrated solenoids are attached into your winch and enables enhanced protection. However, they take extra space an aspect that may require you to modify your vehicle particularly if your mounting space is restricted. Further, remote solenoid is mounted separately, providing you with improved versatility. However, the remote option remains popular because it enables you to install the contractor elsewhere and the winch in a tight space.
