A Little Kumho Tires History

Formerly known as Samyang Tire, the company was founded in 1960 in Yang-dong, Kwangju City, South Korea.

  • As a new tire company, Samyang begun producing on a relatively small scale, cranking out about 20 tires each day using manual labor.
  • In 1963, Samyang hit its first national milestone by producing the first compact passenger car tire manufactured in Korea.
  • By 1973, the company created tires with Uniroyal Tires in the Unites States.
  • In 1976, Kumho tested its first airline tire and produced one million tires, producing 20 million tires per year by 1980.
  • Ten years later, production reached 100 million tires per year.
  • In 1996, Samyang Tires officially became Kumho Tires and about ten years later moved its headquarters to Cucamonga, Cal. in 2005. Today, Kumho is the 9th largest tire manufacturer in the world.
