The Top Selling Pickup Trucks in the United States

By: James Langston

Pickup trucks come in many shapes and sizes but out of all the trucks available on the market, there are a few that appeal to most drivers. These are the ones that ended up selling millions of units throughout the country. Below we will look at the top five best selling pickup truck in the United States.

GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra has been topping the list of the best selling pickup trucks since the early 90s. Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are manufactured as two different trucks but they do have the same mechanical specifications and that is why they have been lumped together. The combined sales figures for Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra from 1990 to 2011 top 15.9 million units.

When we look at these two trucks separately, we will see the difference better. From 1990 to 2011 the Chevrolet Silverado has sold over 12 million units while the GMC Sierra has sold 3.9 million units. This clearly shows that the Chevy Silverado is the most preferred but since the Chevy and the GMC are technically similar, we will treat them as so.

Following the GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado combo is the Ford F-Series. Since 1990 to 2011, Ford managed to sell 15.6 million units of the F-series. This puts it 300,000 units behind GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado figures. The F-series is considered to be a leader in the industry as it was the first truck to have a tailgate mounted step-up into the bed and the high-compression V6 EcoBoost engine.

Dodge Ram

The third spot is taken by the Dodge Ram which has been around for quite a long time since 1929. Dodge recently created the RAM brand that will carry all of its trucks from this point forward. Dodge managed to sell over 6.5 million RAM units from the early 90s to March 2012. This is quite an impressive figure for one of the first pickup truck manufacturers.

Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger was introduced in 1983 and for a long time had been considered the best selling light pickup truck of all time. This was until 2011 when Ford ended production of the Ranger. From early 1990 to late 2011, Ford had sold over 4.7 million units globally. This is what made it the best light pickup truck for over two decades.

Toyota Tacoma

One of the few light pickup trucks available in the market is the Toyota Tacoma. This pickup truck was first introduced in 1995 and by the end of 2011, it has sold over 2.4 million units. The impressive sales figures put the Tacoma ahead of the Dakota by over 10,000 units even though the Dakota had been in existence 9 years before the Tacoma came into existence.
