The Inspiration behind Mickey Thompson’s Performance Tires

Mickey Thompson is known as the greatest legend of off road racing. With a vast number of championship titles under his name, he definitely has a good idea of what kind of tires are best fit to win an off road race. The journey to building a vast knowledge of designing good racing equipment began when he was young.

Igniting a Dream

He was only eight when he chose his goal of beating John Cobbs record for the highest land speed achieved by man. When he finally achieved his dream by making a record 406.6 mile per hour speed on a Pontiac engine car, he knew there wasn’t anyone left to stop him from reaching for more. Furthermore he did it with a car that he had built himself.

A Company is Born

In 1963, he established Mickey Thompson Performance tires to develop tires that were specially designed for racing. Mickey has always pride himself in innovating new car parts for optimum performance and this was a big bold step towards that vision. The range of tires made by the company ranges from aggressive rugged tires to wide low-profile tires that are better suited for street racing. They are made with unique material compounds and tread patterns and this is what sets them apart for racing purposes. It gives them that extra performance edge. Mickey Thompson is remembered mainly for the off road circle which is the most challenging turf to reign in. His company’s off road tire line-up is thus worth assessing.

No amount of performance is held back as can be seen on the super-rugged tread pattern that extends all the way into the shoulder block of the tires. Some tires such as the Baja Pro have a more curved profile with bias belted construction, both of which are features suited for desert races. The Baja Claw TTC series is however flatter with deeper tread grooves all through that share a uniform pattern which run around the shoulders and downwards over the sidewalls.
