The ’83 Grand Prix Was a Season to Remember

1983 was one of the most sensational and theatrical seasons in the history of Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing. The season, which featured 12 races, were evenly split between two racers: budding star Freddie Spencer and Kenny Roberts (the first American to ever win a Grand Prix Championship). Each racer won 6 races a piece and six pole positions during the campaign.

In the 2nd to last race, Spencer and Roberts battled down the stretch for the victory with the young, daring Spencer putting extreme pressure on Roberts during the final lap, finally pushing the two drivers into the dirt. After a quicker recovery from this melee, Spencer ended up narrowly pulling out the victory and causing a post-race fight with Roberts. The race, which took place in Sweden, is often cited as the greatest race in Grand Prix history. With all of the nail biting action, controversial moves, and post-fight drama, I’d have to agree.

This race turned out to be the pivotal moment in the entire season. A few weeks later at the San Marino Grand Prix, Freddie Spencer became the youngest person to ever win the coveted 500cc World Championship at the burgeoning age of 21. He won the entire season by just 2 points!

The Bike & Accessories

Honda

Freddie Spencer went on to have a long and distinguished career and was especially known for riding with Honda, signing with American Honda in 1978, long before he ever won any World Championships. According to Motorcyclist Magazine, “Because he has maintained such close contact, Spencer is the only person in the world to have ridden every Honda GP bike made since the company returned to the sport in ’79.” And, it was these Hondas that would eventually help him to win the historic ’83 Grand Prix season.
