Taking Care of Your Motorcycle Windshield

Taking Care of Your Motorcycle Windshield

Motorcycle windshields are similar to car windshields but they tend to require a bit more care. With motorcycle windshields, it is not just a matter of splashing water and wiping it with a piece of cloth at the gas station, a lot more is involved. Below we will look at what you can do to take care of your windshield.

How Motorcycle Windshields are Different

Motorcycle windshields are made with a type of plastic that is not as scratch-resistant as the glass you will find on the windshield of your car. For this reason, you cannot clean or handle the two windshields in the same way. With motorcycle windshields, a small scratch can easily become hazy especially if you ride under direct sunlight or at night into oncoming headlights.

If you want your motorcycle windshield to sparkle, never use paper as this will scratch the plastic causing a bad look. Gas station squeegies are also not advisable to use as they may scratch the plastic. To effectively clean the windshield, apply warm water and dishwashing liquid with a soft cloth. Soak the windshield before wiping it down. Do not use glass-cleansing agents including petroleum-based chemicals and Windex because the solvent action of the alcohol in these products is harmful.

To completely remove scratches, you will need to break out another soft cloth and use a fine grade-buffing compound to wipe it down. Hand buffing is preferred as it works perfectly without any issues on most shields.

If bugs are constantly attracted to your windshield, you will have to use a polish containing wax to keep them off. Just make sure to consult the cleaning recommendations set forth by the manufacturer before you do so. If you try to remove the bug that is stuck on the windshield without the wax, you may scratch the screen if the bug has dried up or smear it if it is wet. The best way to relocate the insect or any other bug on the windshield is to lay a very clean and wet towel on the bug for some minutes.

Allow the water to soak and soften the bug and easily wipe it away. Try as much as possible not to scratch the plastic. After wiping the shield, follow that up by using your favorite cleaner-polish. When not using the windshield or motorcycle, protect it by sliding an old cotton T-shirt over it to protect against any external elements.
