General Tires Commanding Wins This Season

gen1
Today there a lot of tire companies that pop up seemingly overnight. Yet, there are still a few tire brands that have been around for almost a hundred years. One of the lesser known of the “legends” is General Tires. Since 1915, General Tires (GT) has been a figure in high performance and off-road tires. The underdog tire brand has always loomed in the background of bigger tire brands, but it has always had a cult following with diehard racers.

For off-roaders who care about extreme all-terrain tires, GT has a handful of race-proven models that are continuing to add to the legacy of the classic brand. Recently, the GT race team has been racking up wins around paved racetracks and off-road courses.

General Tires - Racking Up The Wins

Since 2012, the General Tire (GT) racing team has put themselves in high gear to dominate a number of races in all different circuits. From grueling desert races in Nevada at the Mint 400 to looping around a circle track at Firebird International Raceway, GT racers have been themselves comfortable at the top of the podium.

  • June 2012: GT racer Rick Johnson competes to win his sixth Baja 500 race in the General Tire Ford F-150.
  • August 2012: Ryan Beat wins the off-road race Lucas Oil Off Road Race Series (LOORS) on General Tires.
  • August 2012: General Tires sponsors the Reno to Vegas race…and wins.
  • September 2012: Carl Renezeder wins his 100th short course race on General Tires’ Grabbers.
  • October 2012: NASCAR driver Justin Lofton temporarily leaves the pavement to lead GT drivers through the desert on the Camping World Truck Series
  • December 2012 Kent Kroeker wins 45th annual Baja 1000 on General Tires.
  • February 2013: GT Tires updates its off-road racing roster with top drivers.
  • March 2013: Carl Renezeder racks up three wins at Firebird Interional Raceway on General Tires.
  • August 2013: General Tires wins the first ever night rave at LOORS.
  • February 2014: The off-road GT race team will try to use Grabber Tires at every race this season.
General Tires’ 2014 lineup is impressive and should yield for an impressive season. Leading the team is off-road expert and NASCAR standout, Justin Lofton, along with J. Hutchins, Harley Letner, Ray Griffith and desert racer Jerry Whelchel.

“We will do exactly what we did in 2013,” says Lofton.  “Go out and try to win every race.”

A Deep Rooted American History

William Akron, a businessman from Akron, Ohio always had an interest in making tires. He started his career by managing and owning a Firestone Tire business in Kansas City and then decided to try to start his own company. With the help of friend and associate, Winfred Fouse, the two started General Tires.

In 1915, after receiving a $200,000, their business was off the ground. Originally, the company started as a small manufacturing facility for tire repair products, but Akron figured he had the knowledge and materials to make a top-quality off the shelf tire for public consumption.

According to General Tires, when the two started their business, there were more than 300 companies in the world making tires. Instead of offering their tires to car and truck manufacturers (Such as Ford or Chevy), General Tires focused on developing premium replacement tires for vehicles.

By the 1930s, General Tires had changed the tire industry. Their engineers had reinvented the tire by developing revolutionary modelss likethe Balloon Jumbo, which only required 12 psi and the Dual Balloon, which was said to be completely blowout proof. Eventually, General Tires was offering three different tire models that were nearly indestructible with normal use.

Today, General Tires’ “bread and butter” for off-road racer is their Grabber Tire. This can be spotted a mile away with it signature raised red competition lettering on the sidewall. However, it’s not looks that make this the choice tire for desert races. Multi-angle sidewall protectors, even tread design and 3-ply construction make this the ultimate tire for off-road racers.
