BF Goodrich Tires Continues to Dominate Baja

Once you’ve started pushing your truck to the extremes, you can’t skimp out on a quality set of tires. Racers that take on the Baja 250, 500, and Baja 1000 know this, which is why so many of them choose to run BF Goodrich tires. Recently, BF Goodrich was able to help Mexico’s hometown hero, Gustavo Vildosolo Jr. become the champion of the desert.

Just a few days ago, BF Goodrich racers came out to the first big race of the year, the Baja 250, a three-hour race through some of the most unforgiving terrain in the world (there have been a few deaths there over the years). For many racers the Baja 250 is a warm of sorts to prepare themselves for the even longer 500 and 1000 (mile) races. However, racing the 250 can be just as dangerous.

About Gustavo Vildosolo Jr.

There are few racers who have the privilege of competing in their own backyard when they’re trying to make a name for themselves. For Gustavo Vildosolo Jr., racing in the Baja is literally taking a drive in his natural habitat. Vildosolo Jr. is an internationally known off-road racer that uses his #21 to dominate races with Bridgestone Baja tires. Born in the Baja, Vildosolo Jr. started racing in the Baja 250 14 years ago. Within just three years of racing in the event he managed to win the race. Today he is a regular figure at the Baja races and competes in nearly all of the different lengths of the event.

His father, Gus, has been racing around Mexico since 1968, but he didn’t start competing in the Baja SCORE races until 1984. Today, he still competes today with his son, Gustavo, is the same races. Him and his son regularly finish near the top of the podium.

The two Vildosolos race trucks in the competition, although motorcycles, dune buggies and custom fabricated automobiles are take on the desert every year.

BF Goodrich Tires a Rich History

Unlike most tire companies, BF Goodrich Tires carries more than one tire that is specially tailored for desert racing; in fact, BF Goodrich carries six different styles of tires that could be used in the Baja Desert. Since 1962, there has been more races won on BF Goodrich tires than any other and for the last 22 years, no other tire has won the Baja 250.

However, BF Goodrich tires go way beyond just racing around the Mexico Desert. In 1903, the first to cross the United States was fitted with BF Goodrich and the first airplane to cross the Atlantic Ocean had BF Goodrich tires. Their tires are also used in space on NASA space shuttles, if that proves their durability.

BF Goodrich’s Best Performing Baja Tire

There is one tire that rules them all in Mexico, the Baja T/A. This heavy-duty BFGoodrich’s race-spec Off-Road Maximum Traction has won more Baja 1000 champions than all other tires combined. According to the tire company, it was built to run quickly on some of the toughest conditions in the world. The tires are also designed to provide excellent soft surface traction in sandy situations.

What makes the Baja T/A tires so phenomenal for desert conditions is the traction tread compound which is weaved into an aggressive, deep-lug, self-cleaning symmetric tread design. This means that the tread block edges and brawny, solid sidewall lugs deliver great side bite and lateral traction when the going gets extreme.

The tires are offered in a range of sizes, but all of them feature an internal structure combines two full-width steel belts on top of four nylon sidewall plies for exceptional strength, bruise resistance and sidewall puncture resistance to keep driver safe from flats.

Even if you’re not a Baja racer, it never hurts to check out some new tires. If you feel like your getting stuck in the sand too often or if your current tires aren’t confidence inspiring, give a set of Baja T/A tires a chance, you may just end up racing in Mexico one day.
