About the Jeep Wrangler YJ
The Jeep YJ
, offered as "The Wrangler," succeeded the well-loved Jeep CJ in 1987. Originally the Jeep YJ was constructed in Brampton, Ontario, Canada until the factory shut down on April 23, 1992. Manufacturing was subsequently transferred to Toledo, Ohio using the same factory that constructed the Willys Jeeps from the WWII era.
The American Motors Corporation developed their new Jeep for a more comfortable on-road experience to appeal to more regular drivers – while keeping the off-road market. They created a fresh design using a broader track, somewhat lower ground clearance, plus more comfort in the cabin. The YJ also included a leaf spring suspension comparable to that of the CJ. However the suspension springs were made wider, and the Wrangler YJ carried trackbars and swaybars for enhanced control. Even with a new grille design, the body of the Wrangler YJ is quite comparable to the CJ7's, which makes many of the parts interchangeable with some minor modifications. In addiont, the Jeep Wrangler YJ had a bigger windshield than the CJ. The YJs are readily identifiable because of the rectangular headlights, and the manner in which the wiper blades sit on the windshield, rather than the frame, giving this version of Jeep a unique appearance. The blades rest on the windshield because of the greater arc that the blades require to clean the larger windshield. The roll cage was lengthened in 1992 permitting rear shoulder belts. Anti-lock brakes were also included as an option the following calendar year. An automatic transmission option for 4-cylinder Wranglers arrived in 1994 together with a center high-mounted stop lamp.
YJs were built through model year 1995, though YJs continued to be manufactured into mid '96. This brought the total production number to 685, 071 units. In 1996, the Jeep Wrangler TJ was released, replacing the YJ and removing the signature square-shaped headlights and the windshield wiper rest position. To this day, many Jeep lovers favor the YJ over more recent models due to the simple and elegant design, ease with which parts are replaced and upgraded as well as the distinctive "YJ look. "
