Preparing an ATV for Hunting Season

Extreme conditions require the
right tires or you’ll get stuck

Hunting season’s coming up so don’t be caught still readying your ATV when the season opens. Just like when you’re hunting, if you plan ahead you’ll be more successful than if you leave everything to chance.

How best to set up your ATV/UTV and the equipment you’ll need will vary according to the type of hunting you do, the terrain you’ll be crossing and the weather conditions. However there are several essentials every hunter needs to follow to ensure that his ATV is ready to go wherever the hunting takes it and in any weather condition.

Tires and Chains

Probably the most important thing you will ever purchase for your ATV, the tires will decide if you can get to where you need to go, or get stuck in the wilderness. If you think you’ll be encountering water and extreme mud conditions, get a tire capable of dealing with those conditions; if you expect lots of snow a set of chains might be a better bet.

Without traction you’re going nowhere, so get the best tires you can for the terrain you’ll be hunting on.

Inspect Shocks, Suspension and Drivetrain

A winch is an essential addition
to any ATV/UTV

Carefully inspect the rubber suspension and drivetrain boots for holes of any kind. A good indication of a ripped boot is oil or grease spilling through. These boots are there for a reason and that reason is to keep water out of places it will do harm. Replacing a set of rubber boots is far less expensive than replacing a set of drivelines.

A torn or worn boot is a recipe for disaster. Always check boots before each hunting trip and immediately replace any that have holes.

Install a Winch

No one, but no one should ever head off into rough terrain without a winch, especially in winter. Whether you’re hunting or just using your ATV for recreation, a winch is an essential accessory. A winch will pull you out of trouble, move obstacles blocking a trail and even help you hoist a deer for skinning. Winches are definitely the first accessory any ATV/UTV owner should fit.If you can’t work out why it’s so important to have a winch, it will quickly come apparent the first time you get stuck someplace inhospitable.

Headlights or Light Bars

A LED light bar will turn night into day

Hunting requires many hours of driving in darkness, which without lights is a slow process and dangerous for both ATV and rider. A couple of spotlights will pick out hazards up ahead and help you steer clear of holes and ditches. Light bars are even more effective and make driving in the dark a much easier prospect. If you can afford it, opt for LED lights over older HID lighting systems.

Using lights to track prey is illegal in most hunting regulations, however getting to and from your favorite hunting area is a different matter and lights are a crucial addition.

There are hundreds of other accessories that will make your hunting season successful and enjoyable, and ATV equipment specialists 4WheelOnline has all of them and more. But if you take note of the 4 essentials above, you’ll certainly be starting open season well prepared.
