How an Expansion Chamber works is fairly simple; as the exhaust moves through the engine reaching the divergent core, creating a vacuum or a pull at the exhaust port. The divergent core’s main purpose is to pull out any additional exhaust from the engine, removing all burnt gases. An Expansion Chamber will essentially remove the old for the new fresh combustion to occur.
Reducing the width of the convergent cone allows a smooth transition of the exhaust out of the Expansion Chamber. The shape plays an important role in the overall function of the Expansion Chamber. The funnel shape uses techniques that allow the exhaust pulse to return back to the engine exhaust ports. With the correct position, the sound waves will return back to the engine pushing back any residual fresh air-fuel mixture for the next cycle.

The belly of the expansion chamber can either be lengthened or shortened to create a more effective return for the convergent cone. Some people don’t realize that a stinger can also play a role in the overall performance of your ATV. Performance can also vary depending on the length and the width of the stinger. The diagram shows that the inlet tuned pipe and the outlet stingers are the same dimensions; however, they typically are not. The Stinger is traditional smaller in size and plays a significant role in tuning. The most critical elements of an Expansion Chamber are both the divergent and convergent cones. The slants of the cones can affect the performance substantially. Study shows that larger angles will produce more power at lower RPM; this is typically described as the “peaky” powerhead. Smaller angles will produce moderate power over a broader scale of RPM. Every variation of the length, width, and angles will give you the desired performance.
