ATV Suspension Specifics
ATV riding has its own specific suspension needs.
The various types of riding, riding conditions and rider’s personal preferences
or positioning on the vehicle are all factors to take into account when thinking
about ATV suspension. Motocross riding usually takes place on closed circuits that
includes jumps, sharp turns, whoop sections and flat sections to test the rider’s
abilities and speed. This kind of riding needs a suspension able to absorb big impacts
and offer good traction by keeping the wheels on the ground. The ATV must sit low
to provide more stability when turning. Cross-country riding is more oriented towards
testing the rider’s endurance and speed. Cross-country circuits are often loops
including various natural obstacles that require more traction and a softer ride
to prevent the rider from getting tired. The suspension must also keep its properties
under long use and remain “fade-free”. It must also sustain medium-sized jumps while
erasing small bumps.
Sport-utility vehicles suspensions need to provide confort and avoid excessive body
roll and rear end “bucking” (jacking). They also must provide more strength when
working heavy loads. Desert riding needs more travel and a lighter damping. Desert
suspension needs to react quickly to the terrain and keep the ATV high. Dune riding
suspension needs to provide the most power to the wheels and have a very progressive
feel. It must also provide big-hit resistance for jumps and a comfortable ride over
tire tracks and choppy terrain.

On the compliance side of things, a new set of shocks go all the way around. And not just cheap, over sprung shocks, but oil-filled piggy-back reservoir type quality pieces. Good shocks cost a premium and although these might not be considered race-suitable, they are a hands-down improvement over the stockers.
